Joseph Coughlin

Jonathan Swerdlin is the CEO and Co-Founder of Function Health, the first comprehensive health platform offering access to over 160 advanced lab tests and full-body scans. Function is redefining preventive care by making it proactive, accessible, and free from insurance hurdles.

Jonathan began his career in 2008 as an early-stage investor, backing trailblazing companies like Oura Ring, Seed, Parsley Health, and xAI. In 2016, he co-founded Wisdom.vc, a venture firm focused on technologies improving human potential, planetary health, and social systems. Wisdom.vc invests from Seed to Series C, writing initial checks of $500K+.

After witnessing the rapid rise of companies like Oura and Seed—and hearing firsthand from hundreds of founders about the failures of the current healthcare system—Jonathan became convinced the next major leap in impact would come from rethinking health itself.

In 2023, he launched Function to address a system that is reactive, outdated, and failing most Americans. Today, 73% say their healthcare needs are unmet, and chronic disease continues to rise. While a typical physical checks just 19 biomarkers, Function offers more than 8x the data, along with full-body scans for a third of the price. Members receive doctor-reviewed insights, personalized nutrition recommendations, and ongoing tracking via a secure digital platform.

Function’s mission is simple but powerful: give people the tools to live 100 healthy years.

Dr. Joseph Coughlin, or as he is called by industry friends, “Dr. Joe,” is the founder and director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. Researcher, teacher, advisor, and speaker – his work explores how global demographics, technology, and changing behaviors are transforming business & society. He teaches in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies & Planning. Coughlin advises major companies worldwide, the World Economic Forum, OECD, and has served on advisory committees for the White House and several federal agencies. He was named one of the “100 Most Creative in Business” by Fast Company Magazine, one of Investment News “Icons & Innovators,” and earlier this year, he was awarded Investment Wealth Institute’s Investment Consulting Impact Award for his development of longevity planning. Coughlin is a Senior Contributor to Forbes and the author of over 250 academic publications. His best-selling book, The Longevity Economy: Unlocking the World’s Fastest Growing, Most Misunderstood Market (Public Affairs, 2017), is on the reading lists of Fortune 500 corporate boards and executive leadership.
