Humana and Providence have announced a new data exchange partnership designed to serve as a model for the healthcare industry. Launching later this month, the initiative will first focus on automating member attribution for Humana Medicare Advantage members, allowing Providence providers to easily identify which patients are under their care.
Future phases will aim to reduce administrative burden and strengthen clinical decision-making. The partners are building the system on national data standards and modern technology, including HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), Da Vinci Project Implementation Guides, and advanced APIs, creating a scalable framework that can be replicated across the industry.
According to Providence’s vice president of population health informatics, Michael Westover, fragmented and inconsistent data formats have long hindered care coordination. The collaboration, he said, establishes a shared foundation for administrative, financial, and clinical data to advance value-based care.
Humana and Providence noted that the effort aligns with the interoperability pledge made earlier this year to the White House and CMS, supporting the goal of enabling seamless data sharing through FHIR APIs by 2026. “True interoperability should serve clinicians, patients, and payers,” said George Renaudin, Humana’s president of insurance. “Together with Providence, we’re helping providers deliver more effective care while giving members more time to focus on their health.”
