Sonar Raises $2.4M for Teen Mental Health AI Platform, Eyes National Expansion

Sonar Mental Health has secured $2.4 million in pre-seed funding to expand its AI-powered mental health platform designed specifically for adolescents. The funding round was led by Nina Capital, with participation from GSR Ventures, J4 Ventures, and support from the Stanford University Social Impact Founder Fellowship.

The investment comes amid a worsening adolescent mental health crisis in the United States, where nearly half (49.5%) of adolescents experience a mental health disorder, and 20% face a major depressive episode annually. Sonar plans to use the capital to accelerate expansion across school districts nationwide, invest in research and development, and continue building what it describes as "the most scalable, effective solution for preventative mental health support."

At the core of Sonar's approach is Sonny, an AI-powered Wellbeing Companion that engages directly with students through text messages, providing personalized support whenever needed. The system is designed to learn and adapt to each student's unique challenges, offering judgment-free responses to issues ranging from academic stress to peer conflicts and personal loss.

The platform was developed in response to critical gaps in the current mental health support infrastructure for students. According to Sonar, 17% of U.S. high schools lack a school counselor, and 48 out of 50 states exceed the recommended student-to-counselor ratio of 250:1, leaving over 600,000 students without essential support. Meanwhile, 58% of students aged 12-18 are turning to ChatGPT for mental health support despite its lack of specialized training.

Sonar's AI system is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing techniques, with clinical oversight provided by a board of psychiatrists. The platform also includes human oversight, with trained Wellbeing Companions monitoring interactions and escalating high-risk cases to peer counselors and psychiatrists when necessary.

The company has already established partnerships with nine school districts across California, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, and Arkansas, supporting over 4,500 students. Schools implement the system using public mental health and safety grants, with educators introducing Sonny in the classroom as a trusted resource.

Early results show promising outcomes: partner schools report a decline in chronic absenteeism, which has nearly doubled nationwide since 2018, reaching 28%. Between 20-40% of students in partner districts actively use Sonny, with more than 75% of these users reporting a 20%+ increase in well-being.

"By integrating AI-driven support with human expertise, Sonar is transforming adolescent mental health care, ensuring students receive the help they need to succeed academically and emotionally," the company stated, noting that 98% of partner school districts anticipate increasing their mental health funding, reinforcing the value of Sonar's proactive support system.
