Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and the Israel Innovation Authority have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a formal affiliation between AHN's Research Institute and the Innovation Authority. This strategic alliance aims to provide support to Israeli healthcare startups.
Under this collaboration, the Israel Innovation Authority will gain access to AHN facilities for pilot projects, advanced technology support, and various program assistance. The partnership will focus on fostering technological advancements and business development opportunities that can bring some of Israel's most promising health technology startups to Pittsburgh. This will provide these companies and their entrepreneurs with a local research partner and a platform for establishing operations in the United States.
Upon finalisation of the collaboration later this year, the program will open applications in Israel. The Innovation Authority and AHN Research Institute will jointly select, screen, and approve finalists. The selected companies will receive up to 50% funding from the Israel Innovation Authority to conduct joint research and development projects or pilots in collaboration with AHN.
In addition to funding, the AHN Research Institute may provide its own seed funding and non-monetary support. This support includes access to AHN facilities, consulting services, research assistance, information technology assistance, and clinical and administrative staff across various clinical settings. These resources will facilitate the piloting of new technologies and drug therapies.
Dr. Amiram Appelbaum, Chairman of the Israel Innovation Authority and Chief Innovation Scientist at the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. He emphasised that the ability to develop and validate drugs tailored to specific populations is instrumental in advancing medical care. Dr. Appelbaum expressed his delight in partnering with AHN, an institution known for its pioneering scientific research and groundbreaking clinical innovations that have improved healthcare for countless individuals over the years.
This collaboration forms part of the Innovation Authority's broader International Health Centers R&D and Piloting program, which has established similar partnerships with renowned institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Hartford HealthCare, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, as well as hospitals in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Dr. Appelbaum believes that this new collaboration will empower the Israeli medical innovation ecosystem by providing access to top-tier facilities, expertise, infrastructure, and global opportunities. It will serve as a launchpad for Israeli companies to introduce their technologies and services on an international scale.
