AWS Launches Amazon Connect Health to Expand AI Agent Capabilities in Healthcare

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of Amazon Connect Health, a new AI agent-powered platform designed specifically for healthcare organizations. The HIPAA-eligible solution aims to automate repetitive administrative tasks, including appointment scheduling, documentation, and patient verification, while integrating directly with electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Amazon Connect Health represents AWS’s first major product offering AI agents within a regulatory-compliant healthcare platform. The system works alongside existing clinician software to manage administrative workflows such as medical history reviews, clinical documentation, and medical coding. According to AWS, the platform is currently partnered with EHR software providers, data integrators, and patient engagement companies.

At launch, Amazon Connect Health supports patient verification and ambient documentation. Additional capabilities — including appointment scheduling and patient insights — are currently in preview. Medical coding and other features are expected to roll out to customers at a later stage.

The pricing model is set at $99 per user per month for up to 600 patient encounters. AWS noted that most primary care physicians manage up to 300 encounters monthly, positioning the pricing structure within typical practice volumes.

The launch builds on AWS’s broader healthcare portfolio. The company introduced Amazon Comprehend Medical in 2018, a HIPAA-eligible natural language processing service for unstructured medical data. In 2021, it launched Amazon HealthLake, a HIPAA-eligible Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) infrastructure for organizing health data. HealthOmics, a bioinformatics workflow service, followed in 2022.

Beyond cloud services, Amazon has expanded its healthcare presence through acquisitions, including PillPack in 2018 for approximately $1 billion and One Medical in 2022 for $3.9 billion. The company has since integrated elements of these businesses into its retail operations, offering services such as same-day prescription delivery and virtual pediatric visits.

The competitive landscape is intensifying. Startups such as Regard and Notable have long focused on AI-driven administrative automation. More recently, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, while Anthropic introduced Claude for Healthcare. Both companies have positioned their enterprise healthcare services to work with HIPAA-compliant products, signaling growing competition in AI-enabled healthcare administration.
