Boston-based wearable health company Lumia has raised $7 million from J2 Ventures, BonAngels Venture Partners, and angel investors to commercialize Lumia 2, its new generation of smart earrings that monitor blood flow in real time. With an additional $5.1 million in government contracts and grants, the company’s total funding has reached $17.2 million.
The Lumia 2 earrings, available in gold, silver, and clear finishes, weigh less than one gram and can be worn as huggie hoops, cuffs, or studs. The device uses SwitchBack technology to attach to standard push-back earrings, while the cuff version can be worn without a piercing. Each smart earring includes sleep, temperature, menstrual cycle, and readiness tracking alongside continuous blood flow measurement.
“This is what comes after smart rings,” said Daniel Lee, co-founder and CEO of Lumia. “Just as Oura made rings smart, we’ve made earrings smart. Smart Earrings are the ultimate wearable form factor with new capabilities possible only in the ear.”
Developed in collaboration with researchers from Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard, Lumia’s technology was initially designed for patients with chronic blood flow disorders such as POTS and Long COVID-19. The Lumia Core earring back houses the PreciseLight sensor, battery, processors, and health monitoring components, capturing physiological signals near the head and heart that are not measurable at the wrist or finger. Each battery pack provides between five and eight days of use per charge.
Clinical validation of Lumia’s blood flow tracking has been demonstrated in studies conducted at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard, with findings published in the Journal of the American Heart Association and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Lumia 2 will be available in the United States and Canada, supporting both iOS and Android devices. While the device is not FDA-cleared and not intended for medical use, it offers consumers a new form factor for personal health tracking. Founded in 2020 by former Bose engineers, Lumia currently employs 35 staff and holds 11 granted or pending patents.
