New CMS Codes Aim to Boost Digital Therapeutics Adoption

Digital therapeutics have made strides in improving patient access and delivering consistent clinical outcomes across various conditions. However, widespread adoption has been hampered by the reluctance of payers to embrace the associated risks. The newly proposed fee schedules from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for 2025 could be a game-changer, offering a potential solution by introducing reimbursement codes for FDA-cleared digital mental health tools. If implemented, this would be a significant milestone, recognizing the vital role that digital solutions can play in healthcare.

Currently, the lack of widespread reimbursement for digital therapeutics remains a significant barrier despite their benefits in improving care access and adherence. While progress has been made, such as CMS establishing a code for digital behavioral health therapies in 2022, a fee schedule has yet to be set. The new proposed codes, although still focused on digital mental health, are a positive sign. They could encourage insurance companies to offer these treatments as a benefit, signaling optimism for broader adoption and reimbursement in the future.

The proposed codes alone won’t resolve all the reimbursement challenges digital therapeutics face, and adjustments may be needed to optimize the system. However, their potential approval could validate the need for digital therapies, boost investor confidence, and stimulate innovation in the sector. This development could drive the rapid adoption of new technologies, particularly in underserved communities, and empower patients to take a more active role in their healthcare by providing tailored clinical pathways that suit their needs.
