New GE HealthCare AI tool gets FDA clearance

GE HealthCare has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Precision DL deep learning image processing software. This revolutionary software utilises deep learning, a subset of AI and machine learning, to enhance image quality on GE HealthCare's PET/CT system, Omni Legend, resulting in improved small lesion detection and faster scanning times. Precision DL is the latest addition to the company's Effortless Recon DL portfolio.

In January, GE completed the spinoff of its healthcare unit, GE HealthCare, becoming an independent company listed on Nasdaq under the ticker GEHC. This move was part of GE's larger strategy to separate into three entities: GE HealthCare, GE Aerospace, and GE Vernova, focusing on energy businesses. During the same month, GE HealthCare appointed Dr. Taha Kass-Hout as its first Chief Technology Officer and acquired IMACTIS, a French company specialising in computed tomography interventional guidance technology.

In February, GE HealthCare signed an agreement to acquire Caption Health, a manufacturer of AI-enabled ultrasound guidance software. Recently, the company reported its first full quarter earnings as an independent entity, with $372 million in net income for the first quarter, an 8% increase in revenue from the previous year.

These developments highlight GE HealthCare's commitment to advancing medical imaging technology through AI and deep learning, ultimately improving patient outcomes and expanding access to state-of-the-art imaging across various healthcare settings.

"One of the main advantages of moving fully into the future of AI and deep learning is making state-of-the-art imaging accessible to more practices, across more care areas than ever before," said Jan Makela, president and CEO of imaging at GE HealthCare.
