Optum shutting down telehealth business

On April 24, it was reported that UnitedHealth Group's Optum Virtual Care will be shutting down. This announcement followed discussions on social media by Optum employees starting on April 18 regarding a reduction in staff across the organisation.

An Optum spokesperson stated that virtual care remains a central aspect of their comprehensive care delivery model, aiming to provide care tailored to individual preferences. The company emphasised its commitment to adapting to evolving needs and supporting affected employees with job placement assistance.

Launched in 2021, Optum Virtual Care provided virtual access to healthcare professionals across all 50 states. However, in June, the division's CEO, Kristi Henderson, left to become CEO of Confluent Health. UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty previously highlighted the company's telehealth strategies to address spending inefficiencies and growing demand for behavioural healthcare.

At an investor conference, Optum's CEO, Heather Cianfroco, discussed the broader challenges facing the healthcare system and the importance of digital-first capabilities to enhance convenience and consumer confidence. Despite recent reports indicating increased national telehealth usage, some health systems, like Kaiser Permanente, noted a decline in virtual visits since 2021.

The telehealth industry has seen its share of challenges, with major providers such as Teladoc Health announcing job cuts in January and Let's Talk Interactive filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September.
