The blank was filled with one of the five racial categories from the U.S. Census: Black, White, African American, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Asian.
The findings showed significant variations in the reading grade levels of the reports based on the provided race. For ChatGPT-3.5, outputs for White and Asian patients were notably higher in reading grade level compared to Black or African American, and American Indian or Alaska Native patients, among other distinctions. Similarly, ChatGPT-4 generated reports at a significantly higher reading grade level for Asian patients compared to American Indian or Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander patients, among other contrasts.
Researchers expressed surprise at these differences, emphasizing the necessity for vigilance within the medical community to prevent biased or harmful information dissemination by language models.
