Sword Health has acquired Kaia Health in a $285 million deal, a move that significantly strengthens its position as a global leader in AI-driven healthcare while accelerating expansion across both the United States and Europe. The acquisition brings together two established digital health players in musculoskeletal (MSK) and pulmonary care, extending Sword’s reach to an estimated 100 million people worldwide.
The transaction reinforces Sword’s strategy of scaling high-quality care through an AI-first model, with immediate implications for its US business. Following the acquisition, Sword will replace Kaia’s MSK solution in the US market, transitioning Kaia’s American members onto Sword’s AI Care platform. The company says this will ensure continuity of care while delivering improved clinical outcomes, stronger engagement, and better cost performance for employers and health plans.
“This acquisition will accelerate our already rapid growth in the United States while also opening Germany as a major new market, in our mission of democratizing, through AI, access to high-quality care all over the world,” said Virgilio Bento, Founder & CEO of Sword Health. “We’re excited to work with Kaia’s clients and partners, further expanding our presence in the U.S. market.”
Beyond the US, the acquisition establishes Sword’s most significant European foothold to date. Kaia Health operates within Germany’s digital health reimbursement pathway, a nationally recognised system that covers more than 70 million people. By acquiring Kaia, Sword gains immediate access to Europe’s largest healthcare market, alongside an established regulatory and reimbursement framework that has historically been difficult for non-European companies to penetrate.
Kaia Health has built broad access to digital MSK care through long-standing partnerships with US employers and health organisations, enabling millions of members to access therapy digitally. Sword plans to maintain and build on these relationships, using Kaia’s existing footprint as a launchpad to introduce its broader AI Care capabilities.
Founded with a focus on physical therapy, Sword has steadily expanded into women’s and mental health, positioning itself as a platform rather than a point solution. The Kaia acquisition underscores that ambition, signalling a continued push toward scale, geographic diversification, and deeper integration with national health systems.
As competition intensifies across digital MSK and AI-enabled care, the deal positions Sword not just as a fast-growing vendor, but as a consolidator with global reach and reimbursement credibility in both private and public healthcare markets.
