Community-Led Longevity for the Other 99%

About this Session:

While tech execs are obsessed with intermittent fasting and $200 supplements, communities facing the steepest declines in life expectancy are being left out of the conversation entirely. We're living in two different Americas when it comes to aging: one where wealthy individuals optimize their way to 100 with personalized medicine and concierge care, and another where entire zip codes are losing years of life expectancy due to structural inequities. Community-led longevity flips the script by asking not "how can we live longer?" but "what is specifically killing people in this community, and how do we tackle those root causes?" Community-led longevity recognizes that each neighborhood faces unique mortality drivers from environmental toxins in industrial areas to food deserts in urban cores to isolation in rural communities. It meets people where they are, learning from the challenges that shape their community. By applying a social determinants of health framework to longevity science, we can move beyond generic advice about diet and exercise to address the systemic barriers that steal years from specific populations. After all, what good is discovering the fountain of youth if only the people with fountains in their yards get to drink from it?
