The Next Infodemic

About this Session:

With 76% of individuals seeking health information online and nearly 40% of those search results containing false or misleading content, misinformation has become one of the most defining health challenges of our time. The recent resurgence of false claims linking vaccines to autism following high-profile political statements has created ripple effects that harm not only the autism community, but also decades of public health progress that took generations to build. Measles outbreaks are becoming increasingly common as vaccine hesitancy continues to spread through social media and influencer networks, proving that we're not just stagnating in public health efforts, we're actively moving backwards. Current approaches to combat these knowledge deficits through fact-checking and education are simply not enough because they're treating symptoms, not the disease. We must address the deeper resistance to behavior change and the trust issues at a grassroots level through real dialogue with opposing viewpoints, engagement that goes beyond one-time corrections, and community level trust building that acknowledges people’s concerns while providing accurate information. The urgency is growing in areas like pediatric health, where misinformation about ADHD, transgender care, and mental health can have devastating consequences for vulnerable populations already facing healthcare access barriers. Let’s rebuild the trust and credibility around accurate health information, because when lies travel faster than truth, patients pay the price.
