You Don't Own Me ... or My Data

About this Session:

Patient-centricity requires access to health data, but are access and ownership the same thing? HIPAA firmly established patient access to health data as a legal right. The Cures Act broadened these rights to put patients in ultimate control of their data. In short, medical records, bills, insurance statements, and related information are the patient?s property; and proper use stands to engage, reduce errors, strengthen coordination, and place the patient in the center of the care team. However, today?s expectations must factor-in digital limitations and risk such as medical record errors, racial biases, technical roadblocks, and privacy and security. Join this panel of experts as they delve into the nuances of patient electronic health information in an ever-expanding digital world; and the consequences, intended and unintended, of patient electronic data ownership.
