Public health is past its breaking point. Fragmented systems, budget cuts, workforce challenge coupled with rapid technological change and communication platforms require a fundamentally different operating model. California's Public Health Network Innovation Exchange (PHNIX) was created to address this head-on by integrating three essential pillars into one cohesive approach. PHNIX is embracing innovation through AI-enabled analytics, modern data infrastructure, and real-time surveillance tools to strengthen preparedness, accelerate response, and enable evidence-based decision-making. Since public health challenges don't remain within jurisdictional or sector boundaries, PHNIX is building collaborations within the state, across the region, and with different sectors. And communication will not be an afterthought. The initiative uses social media, digital platforms, and trusted public health and community voices to counter misinformation and rebuild credibility. What makes PHNIX work is how these pillars - innovation, collaboration and communication - connect to strengthen public health with a vision to develop a stronger and more sustainable public health system at a critical time.
