Abbott has introduced Libre Assist, a new generative AI–powered feature within its Libre app designed to help people better understand how food choices affect their glucose levels. Unveiled during CES 2026 in Las Vegas, the feature predicts the glucose impact of meals before they are eaten and provides personalized guidance using data from Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system.
Libre Assist is designed to move beyond traditional food logging tools, which typically analyze meals only after consumption. Instead, the AI-driven feature flags foods or ingredients likely to cause significant glucose spikes and suggests adjustments—such as alternative ingredients, preparation methods, or portion changes—to help reduce that impact. Users can then confirm the actual glucose response after eating through their Libre sensor data. Abbott said the feature will be free for Libre app users, aiming to support more proactive and informed decision-making around meals.
Early users report that the feature is especially helpful when dining out or trying unfamiliar foods. Shirley Bovshow, who lives with Type 2 diabetes and tested Libre Assist ahead of launch, said the tool removes much of the guesswork by showing predicted glucose effects in advance and validating outcomes afterward. Abbott positions Libre Assist as a practical, everyday companion that helps people make smarter food choices while reinforcing learning through real-time CGM feedback.
