The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Layer Health have announced a significant multi-year collaboration that aims to accelerate cancer research through artificial intelligence. This partnership will utilize large language models (LLMs) to extract critical clinical data from patient medical records, dramatically improving the efficiency of research processes.

The collaboration builds upon a successful pilot program focused on breast cancer patients, which demonstrated the platform's exceptional ability to extract complex concepts from patient charts with accuracy exceeding human capabilities. Traditionally, gathering information from medical records for research purposes has been a labor-intensive and time-consuming process, heavily dependent on manual effort. This includes the Cancer Prevention Study-3, a landmark population study involving 300,000 participants, thousands of whom have been diagnosed with cancer and provided their medical records for research purposes.
