Babyscripts Ride-Share Program Saved Expectant Mothers Time, Money

Babyscripts, a virtual maternity care company, has been providing free rides to pregnant and postpartum women in Washington, D.C., through a partnership with Lyft. The initiative supports transportation-insecure patients, enabling them to attend essential perinatal and postnatal appointments. Babyscripts offers services like perinatal education, remote monitoring for conditions like hypertension, and mental health care, collaborating with healthcare providers such as MedStar Health and George Washington University.

With an average of 10–15 visits during an uncomplicated pregnancy, many women face challenges in attending appointments due to unreliable transportation. Babyscripts CEO Anish Sebastian highlighted the importance of consistent care, noting that missed visits can impact health outcomes. In the program’s first six months, Babyscripts provided 700 rides to 117 patients, saving an average of $173 per person. Roughly 70% of participants identified as transportation-insecure.

The program addresses a critical need in D.C., where maternal mortality rates are higher than the national average, with Black women disproportionately affected. Providers have reported improved follow-up rates, allowing better delivery of care. Babyscripts plans to continue the program in D.C. and explore expanding it to other U.S. cities. The company currently operates in 28 states.
