Epic's Latest Tool Streamlines Health Data Sharing

Epic has introduced a new individual access services (IAS) feature that simplifies the process for patients to release their medical records to health and wellness apps. This feature aligns with Epic's ongoing efforts to enhance patient-centric care and digital technology integration. Rob Klootwyk, Epic's director of interoperability, emphasized that this development allows individuals to securely access their health data at their fingertips.

The IAS capability is part of a broader healthcare industry push, facilitated by federal health tech policies, to advance data-sharing. A key component of this effort is the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), which became operational in December. TEFCA aims to create universal connectivity across healthcare providers and patients, establishing a standardized governance and technical framework for nationwide interoperability. This framework includes various exchange purposes, such as individual access services, treatment, payment, and public health.

Epic's IAS feature, integrated with the TEFCA framework, allows patients to access their electronic medical records, including health history, conditions, and treatments. This improvement eliminates the need for patients to remember each healthcare provider, enabling more efficient authorization for data disclosures. Epic also ensures that patients understand what data they are sharing through a patient education screen. As a Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) under TEFCA, Epic supports medical data exchange, with numerous hospitals and health systems pledging participation. Despite some barriers to interoperability, Epic's new feature represents a significant advancement in patient data management and digital health integration.
