Flatiron Health, a digital health company acquired by Roche in 2018, is teaming up with the Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC) to advance access to clinical trials in community settings. With a nationwide network of over 34,000 practitioners and 1,700 care programs, ACCC provides resources and education to the oncology community. Flatiron Health specializes in oncology-focused health technology, offering electronic health record (EHR) services and clinical decision support tools to providers, aiming to improve clinical trial efficiency and data gathering.
The collaboration focuses on two main initiatives: a research project studying the characteristics of clinical trials in community oncology practices and an operational effort to raise awareness about technology that streamlines trial conduct and reduces data entry burdens. Leveraging Flatiron's clinical trial data platform, the partnership aims to accelerate research by enhancing access to clinical trial data and improving data management efficiency using EHR-to-electronic data capture (EDC) technology.
The EHR-to-EDC software facilitates automated transfer of patient data from health records into research databases, eliminating manual data entry and enhancing data accuracy. By promoting interoperable use with various EHR systems, the partnership seeks to make clinical trials more accessible and efficient for both community practices and academic centers. Dr. Ivy Altomare, head of research oncology and clinical research at Flatiron Health, emphasized the importance of clinical research in oncology and the critical role technology plays in facilitating access to novel therapies for patients.
