Fraser Health Authority, a healthcare organisation in Canada, is pioneering the adoption of generative AI for clinical documentation. This progressive initiative employs Google Cloud's Vertex AI and large language models (LLMs) to automatically generate initial drafts of hospital course narratives during patient discharge, effectively reducing the time burden on clinicians and streamlining discharge workflows.
Traditional discharge summaries often demand significant time and effort from clinicians, requiring manual input and summarisation of a patient's entire hospital stay. This labour-intensive process can detract from crucial patient care responsibilities. Generative AI offers a solution by autonomously creating draft summaries, allowing clinicians to dedicate more time to essential tasks and provide improved patient care. This pilot project represents a notable advancement in leveraging AI technology to enhance healthcare delivery and optimise workflow efficiency.
Fraser Health Authority collaborated with MEDITECH and Google Cloud to implement this innovative solution within the Expanse EHR platform. The collaboration harnesses MEDITECH's expertise in EHR technology and Google Cloud's cutting-edge AI capabilities, delivering a practical and secure solution for healthcare professionals.
The success of this pilot project has the potential to reshape how healthcare providers document patient information. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can anticipate the emergence of even more innovative use cases, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and effective healthcare system for everyone.
