Nearly one in three women experience bladder issues, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor disorders, or symptoms related to pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, and intimacy well-being. To support those affected, Highmark has introduced Virtual Pelvic Health powered by Sword Health as a no-cost benefit for eligible members. Accessible via the My Highmark app or web portal, the program pairs participants with a pelvic health specialist and provides an FDA-listed insertable device that tracks pelvic floor muscle performance. The device, paired with a mobile app, delivers real-time feedback and personalized exercises, along with progress tracking and educational resources.
“At Highmark Health, we strive to make healthcare more accessible,” said Karen Hanlon, EVP & COO, Highmark Health. “Pelvic health concerns are often underreported due to stigma, so this program allows members to strengthen their pelvic muscles safely, conveniently, and discreetly at home.”
Virtual Pelvic Health builds on Highmark’s partnership with Sword Health, which began in 2022 with Virtual Joint Health for musculoskeletal care. The program has seen over 36,000 enrollees, delivering high engagement and significant pain reduction. 92% of members actively participate, and 69% of those with moderate to severe pain report significant relief. Participants also experience reduced depression and anxiety symptoms, along with a statistically significant decline in ER visits, hospital admissions, imaging, and surgeries, resulting in $112 per member per month in cost savings.
“This is the Quintuple Aim in action—improving access, experience, and outcomes while reducing costs,” said Richard Clarke, PhD, SVP, Chief Analytics Officer, Highmark Health. “By reinvesting savings into care, we continue to make healthcare easier and more proactive for our members.”
