Mirvie receives $4.6M grant to study preeclampsia in Sub-Saharan Africa

Mirvie, a company specialising in predicting unexpected pregnancy complications, has secured a $4.6 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The funding will be used to support their efforts in predicting and preventing pregnancy complications by understanding the underlying biology of each pregnancy on a global scale. The focus will be on studying preeclampsia among pregnant women in low and middle-income countries using Mirvie's RNA platform, which involves a simple blood test from the mother.

Preeclampsia is a significant cause of maternal death in developing countries, affecting 10 million women worldwide. The research aims to create innovative interventions to address maternal mortality and promote personalised medicine for maternal health. The grant will also aid in launching study sites in Cameroon, Ghana, and Zambia.

Mirvie's previous achievements, such as FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, demonstrate the company's momentum in the maternal health space. Additionally, the study will be conducted with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion in maternal health research.

The Mirvie Research Collaborative is already enrolling diverse pregnant individuals in the United States to create a comprehensive biobank of pregnancy transcriptomes.
