Neuroelectrics, a Barcelona-based start-up, is developing a neurostimulating headcap aimed at improving the lives of people with brain diseases such as epilepsy, depression, and Alzheimer's. This headcap monitors brain electrical activity and stimulates brain regions with mild currents. Co-founder and CEO Ana Maiques highlighted its potential for treating epilepsy, noting that it provides a noninvasive alternative to traditional surgical interventions.
The technology has shown promise, with a study demonstrating a 41% median seizure reduction. Neuroelectrics is working towards FDA approval by September 2025. Their approach involves creating a digital brain replica, or NeuroTwin, to simulate and predict treatment outcomes. The ultimate goal is for patients to use the headcap at home, with treatment involving ten daily 20-minute sessions over eight weeks.
The company currently manufactures around 400 devices annually, distributing them to 75 countries. The headcap aims to offer an accessible and noninvasive treatment option for those not responding to medication.
