Novant Health saves $7M with EHR data platform

Novant Health, a healthcare system based in Winston-Salem, N.C., has successfully reduced costs by leveraging electronic health record (EHR) data to identify opportunities for decreasing hospital stays and streamlining care.

One of Novant Health's facilities, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C., implemented the data platform provided by Health Catalyst. This implementation resulted in estimated savings of $7 million over the past 2.5 years by eliminating unnecessary care and reducing labour costs associated with analytics. The hospital achieved this by optimising its EHR system to standardise various processes, including the administration of blood products, placement of sepsis patients in intensive care units, elective inductions, and the management of high-cost drugs.

In an article from June 28, the data company reported that Novant Health's systematic performance improvement approach, coupled with the valuable data and analytics derived from the Health Catalyst data platform, has facilitated organisational transformation. Claire Corbett, Director of Performance Excellence at Novant Health, emphasised the significance of using data to proactively identify and drive improvements, with clinicians and operational leaders leveraging this data to inform decision-making and enhance patient care.

Overall, Novant Health's strategic use of EHR data, in collaboration with the Health Catalyst platform, has enabled cost reductions and operational enhancements, paving the way for continued progress in healthcare delivery.
