Oura Acquires Doublepoint For Gesture Recognition Technology In Wearables

Oura has acquired Helsinki-based startup Doublepoint, a company specializing in gesture recognition technology for wearables. Doublepoint’s core offering, the Doublepoint Kit, enables integration of gesture-based controls into devices such as smartwatches, augmented and virtual reality headsets, and IoT systems. The technology uses Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors to detect motion in 3D space, enabling features such as pinch detection and wrist-based pointing controls.

Doublepoint’s system allows users to interact with digital interfaces by combining gesture recognition with eye tracking—looking at a target and pinching fingers to select it. The IMU-based approach also supports wrist-based ray casting and smart IoT controls, enabling users to manage lights, music, or television functions directly from a wearable device. Following the acquisition, Doublepoint’s founders and AI engineering team will join Oura, primarily operating from Helsinki while collaborating with global teams.

Oura said the acquisition strengthens its talent base and supports the development of more intuitive, human-centered experiences across its ecosystem. The move aligns with Oura’s broader expansion strategy, which has included significant funding rounds and partnerships in recent years. The company has attracted major investment, including a $75 million strategic investment from Dexcom and over $900 million in funding in 2024.

The deal also reflects intensifying competition in wearable gesture control. Apple introduced pinch-based gesture controls on the Apple Watch Series 9 in 2023, enabling users to interact with the device through finger movements. By adding Doublepoint’s gesture recognition capabilities, Oura appears to be positioning its ring platform to expand beyond health tracking into broader device and environment control.
