Oura, known for its health-focused wearable rings, has acquired Veri, a Finnish startup specializing in metabolic health monitoring. The acquisition aligns with the recent surge in over-the-counter glucose monitors, with companies like Dexcom and Abbott entering the U.S. market with affordable devices. Veri’s platform, which emphasizes stabilizing blood sugar levels for improved health outcomes, will be integrated into Oura’s health offerings, although the details of this integration are not yet clear. Oura's CEO, Tom Hale, noted that the Veri brand will be discontinued by the end of 2024, and its platform absorbed into Oura's services.
The acquisition reflects increasing consumer interest in nutrition and metabolic health. An internal Oura survey revealed that 97% of its users are keen on understanding how food affects their health, with 13% already using continuous glucose monitors. While there is speculation about Oura integrating glucose monitoring into its wearables, Hale stated that such technology is still a distant possibility. Oura will absorb most of Veri’s staff, adjusting operations as needed, particularly in light of over-the-counter access eliminating the need for prescription-based elements of Veri’s service.
Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, but this acquisition signals Oura’s intent to expand its influence in the metabolic health sector.
