Varist has launched its DICOM Detection Engine, a cybersecurity system designed specifically to protect medical imaging and healthcare data infrastructure from malware, including increasingly sophisticated AI-powered threats. The technology provides real-time protection for picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), electronic health records (EHRs), radiology information systems and other healthcare networks that process large volumes of clinical and imaging files.
Medical imaging environments represent a particularly challenging cybersecurity surface because hospitals routinely exchange millions of files across modalities including MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound and X-ray. Varist's technology analyzes DICOM, the standard format used for medical imaging, alongside HL7 and FHIR healthcare data formats. The company says conventional malware scanners can overlook threats embedded within specialized healthcare files or struggle to analyze the extremely large files common in medical imaging.
The DICOM Detection Engine performs full-file scanning of medical images up to 3GB, including image data regions that traditional scanners may not inspect. It also analyzes DICOM headers to identify manipulation that could potentially transform imaging files into executable malware delivery mechanisms. This is intended to protect clinical systems from both known threats and new attacks specifically designed to exploit healthcare data formats.
To detect previously unknown or zero-day malware, Varist combines large-scale scanning with predictive analysis that simulates the behavior of suspicious files in real time. According to the company, each instance of its Hybrid Detection Engine can process approximately 500 files per second, while suspicious files can be analyzed in under nine milliseconds. The architecture can also scale horizontally to support large health systems, multi-site networks and cloud environments without creating significant delays in clinical workflows.
The platform is designed to allow healthcare organizations to scan files locally rather than sending sensitive medical information to public cloud infrastructure, helping address privacy, compliance and cybersecurity requirements. By creating detection engines specifically for DICOM and other healthcare standards, Varist aims to close security gaps as hospitals increasingly connect imaging infrastructure, EHRs and AI systems while facing more automated and adaptive cyber threats.
