Retail giant Walmart, has announced its launching a major initiative for mental health education and support for its employees, as the U.S struggles with an increasing behavioural health crisis.
Walmart's new “Workplace Mental Health course” for employees will be facilitated by clinicians from Lyra Health, known for education on mental health risks in the workplace. The course will focus on training managers and leaders in how to deal with someone with behavioural health issues in the workplace. The course builds on Walmart’s existing mental health training and support for employees such as 24-hour access to counselling and no-cost virtual care with licensed psychiatrists, therapists and psychologists.
Walmart wants to “appropriately and empathetically engage with someone who may be struggling with a mental health challenge,” Walmart’s Chief People Officer, Donna Morris said in a memo to company leaders including campus associates at the director level and above across the retailer’s markets and regions.
