YouTube Health makes first aid and emergency care videos more accessible

YouTube Health has announced a new initiative to prioritise reliable first aid and emergency care content by reputable healthcare organisations as the top search results on its platform. The "first aid information shelves" will feature step-by-step videos in English and Spanish covering topics such as choking/Heimlich, bleeding, CPR, seizure, stroke, opioid overdose, and heart attack. Collaborating with organisations like the Mexican Red Cross, Mass General Brigham, and the American Heart Association, YouTube aims to provide accurate and accessible information to users during emergency situations. The American Heart Association, for instance, has developed a free CPR course as part of this initiative.

This move builds upon YouTube's 2022 expansion of product features related to health, which included health-source information panels labelling credible health content from authoritative sources. Last year, YouTube launched AI-enabled Aloud for dubbing videos in multiple languages and THE-IQ Creator Program, an extension of the Tackling Health Equity Through Information Quality (THE-IQ) program. The IQ-Creator Program supports healthcare professionals in creating content for underrepresented communities in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, and the U.K. The platform is actively working with healthcare organisations and professionals to review translations and ensure quality health information is accessible globally.

In a statement, Ana Robles Quijano, the national fundraising coordinator from the Mexican Red Cross, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with YouTube Health, emphasising the importance of providing reliable first aid information to help save lives and prevent incorrect practices based on inadequate medical knowledge. Overall, YouTube's efforts underscore a commitment to fostering accurate health information and promoting community well-being through accessible and reliable content.
