Story Slam: Improving Equity beyond Care Delivery

About this Session:

The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated existing inequities many populations and communities face when it comes not only to accessing care but also housing, food and other critical resources like education and job training. This story slam session highlights how three leading health systems, in partnership with community organizations, are addressing structural inequities in their service areas to improve their patients’ health and standard of living.

UMass Memorial Health, in partnership with Civico, a community-focused development organization, is addressing social disadvantage and pervasive inequality by redirecting a portion of its investment portfolio toward housing and other community investments.

Cleveland Clinic shifted its paradigm to see its role in the community through the equity lens and used its Community Health Needs Assessment as a catalyst behind the Clinic’s anchor strategy, “Heal, Hire and Invest.”

By participating in the Boston Opportunity System Collaborative, Boston Medical Center set out to reinvent Boston’s jobs ecosystem by supporting residents in specific communities through the training and hiring process and into careers within Boston’s anchor institutions.
