Glorified Digital Filing Cabinets or EHRs?

About this Session:

Nearly 90% of in-office physicians utilize EHRs, a major change from the rooms full of files from our past. EHRs were heralded as a revolutionary step in healthcare digitization, promising to streamline patient care, improve data accessibility, and enhance clinical decision-making. Although we have digitally rehomed this wealth of health data, have we actually transformed it much from mere storage to actionable insights that can improve both patient care and healthcare operations? Are EHRs becoming little more than glorified digital filing cabinets? While they've certainly improved upon paper records in terms of storage and retrieval, many EHRs struggle to deliver on more advanced functionalities. They often lack intuitive user interfaces, fail to provide meaningful data analytics, and create additional administrative burdens for healthcare providers. As AI-driven analytical capabilities, interoperability initiatives and open-source solutions expand, EHRs have the potential to meet the lofty goals they originally intended. The development of modern tech stacks in healthcare will continue to evolve alongside the transformation of EHRs from passive repositories to active, intelligent platforms that can significantly enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes.
