Healthcare AI is abundant in promise, yet real-world evidence on its clinical impact remains limited. At the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek - Netherlands Cancer Institute (AVL-NKI), we implemented an AI-supported consultation preparation system and prospectively evaluated its effects on clinical practice.
Across 33 oncological consultations, the system was associated with a 30% reduction in cognitive task load, a more than 50% decrease in clinician-reported frustration, and a reduction in mean preparation time of over three minutes per consultation.
In this presentation, we reflect on the practical implementation of AI in the consultation room: what proved effective, what challenges emerged, and what these findings imply for the responsible deployment of AI in routine clinical care.
