Interoperability Breaking Down Borders: A Global Challenge

About this Session:

Through several administrations, our federal government has focused on three aims: making healthcare an affordable value through data-driven payment and transparency; easing the patient and provider burden through data simplification; and achieving trusted, secure data interoperability. Yet, policy challenges, infrastructure constraints, technical standards, and the sheer number of various platforms to achieve these goals present herculean obstacles and these difficulties are not limited to the U.S. In the Netherlands, policy prohibiting the creation of a national electronic health record (EHR), is hampering the nation’s engagement with European efforts to deploy an international patient summary of information. Join this panel of authorities as they investigate interoperability nuances beyond the boundaries of the U.S., and discover shared complications, lessons can be learned, and potential ways forward will be identified.
