As health systems increasingly take on the role of community “anchor institutions,” they have a unique opportunity to redefine longevity, not just by extending lifespan, but by improving healthspan through population-centered care and deep community engagement. Bridging public health and traditional healthcare, they are deploying wraparound care models for older adults with complex medical and social needs, integrating preventive geroscience, lifestyle interventions, and chronic-disease management under one roof. By assessing physical and cognitive function, offering personalized lifestyle and preventive care, and connecting patients to research and interventions aimed at slowing age-related decline, health systems can both drastically improve healthspans of patients and better support older adults’ long-term independence and well-being.
