Korean medical AI company AIRS Medical has raised $20 million in a Series C funding round led by BSK Investment and Shinyoung Securities. The funds will support AIRS Medical’s continued global expansion and research and development efforts. Last year, the company launched its flagship product, SwiftMR, in the United States and European markets. Initially introduced in South Korea in 2021, SwiftMR leverages deep learning to enhance MRI scanning efficiency by up to 50%.
In another significant development, a Hong Kong project has received government support to develop AI-driven mental health companion robots. The Research Grants Council awarded HK$40.89 million ($5.2 million) to a research project led by Professor Johan Hoorn from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The initiative aims to create at-home humanoids with embedded large language models to provide personalized mental health support. Additionally, on-screen mental health assistant avatars for mobile applications will be developed, along with a communication model to predict and recognize signs of stress or low mood.
Meanwhile, MediSim VR has partnered with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research to open a VR training laboratory in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This facility, claimed to be the first in the city, provides immersive training for medical students. This follows the launch of a similar VR-based nursing training facility at Kusum Dhirajlal Hospital in Gujarat. These initiatives highlight the growing adoption of VR technology in medical training in India.
