Amazon brings direct-to-consumer telehealth to all 50 states

Amazon Clinic, the virtual medical clinic launched by the online retail giant in November, is now expanding its services to all 50 states, providing nationwide telehealth access through its website and mobile app.

Initially introduced as a message-based virtual consultation service, Amazon Clinic has been offering care for 35 common health concerns, such as urinary tract infections, pink eye, and acid reflux. The platform connects users with licensed clinicians who can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication for various common health and lifestyle conditions.

Previously available in 34 states, the service has now been extended nationwide, including Washington, D.C. In addition to text-based consultations, Amazon Clinic has introduced video visits with healthcare providers on both Amazon.com and the mobile app, enhancing the accessibility and convenience of their services.

Although currently operating on a cash pay basis, Amazon Clinic does not yet accept insurance. The service's messaging-based consultation costs an average of $35, while a video visit costs $75 on average. This expansion aims to help customers receive the care and medications they need in a way that best suits their convenience.

Dr. Nworah Ayogu, Chief Medical Officer and General Manager at Amazon Clinic, emphasised the significance of virtual health services in enabling patients to manage their healthcare effectively, especially for those facing time, tool, or resource constraints. By offering multiple health services, Amazon Clinic strives to provide customers with choice, convenience, and continuity of care, removing barriers to accessing healthcare for everyday health concerns at any time and location. Notably, customers can review the cost of their visit before starting the consultation.

The expansion of Amazon Clinic had been expected but experienced a delay due to concerns from lawmakers about the company's privacy practices. In June, Senators Peter Welch (D-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) expressed concerns about patient health data privacy and the potential risk posed to users' private health data by the platform's new healthcare service. Despite these concerns, Amazon Clinic has proceeded with its nationwide expansion to serve a broader population.
