Amgen is expanding its collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance the discovery and production of medicines. The partnership involves leveraging generative AI and machine learning on the AWS cloud platform to increase the manufacturing throughput of pharmaceuticals.
Amgen plans to implement these technologies in its upcoming assembly and final product packaging facility in Columbus, Ohio. The facility will incorporate digital and robotic technology, with a connected platform on AWS using Amazon SageMaker for building, training, and deploying machine learning models.
The objective is to reduce the need for human intervention in the manufacturing process, enhance operational efficiency, and enable real-time performance monitoring to predict and prevent equipment failures.
Amgen and AWS have been experimenting with generative AI and machine learning in drugmaker's R&D functions for the past decade. Other pharmaceutical companies, such as Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim, are also incorporating AI in various aspects of their operations for digital transformation and drug discovery efforts.
