Ascend Learning has acquired M7 Health, an AI-powered clinical scheduling and workforce management platform used by academic medical centers, community facilities and rural hospitals across the U.S. The acquisition expands Ascend's healthcare workforce portfolio by connecting staffing and shift management with its existing capabilities across education, credentialing, competency development and frontline workforce engagement.
M7 Health uses AI to forecast staffing requirements, automatically balance clinical schedules and identify internal clinicians who can fill open shifts. Its platform considers factors including clinical skills, staffing demand, scheduling preferences and fatigue rules to help hospitals maintain appropriate coverage while reducing reliance on manual scheduling processes. According to the company, customers have achieved more than a 60% reduction in scheduling administration, up to 40% lower premium labor spending and a 30% reduction in nurse turnover.
The acquisition adds M7's scheduling capabilities to Ascend's existing healthcare workforce technologies. These include StaffGarden, which manages clinical competencies, credentials and professional development, and Laudio, which provides workflow tools for frontline healthcare leaders, including digital rounding, employee recognition and team huddles. Ascend also has a significant presence in healthcare education through ATI Nursing Education and the National Healthcareer Association.
By combining these platforms, Ascend aims to create a more integrated workforce lifecycle spanning education and qualification through professional development, employee engagement and daily staffing. Hospitals could potentially use competency and credential information when making shift assignments, helping ensure clinicians have the appropriate skills while also considering career development and workforce retention.
M7's platform is designed to integrate with existing hospital workforce infrastructure, including systems such as Workday and UKG, rather than replacing core HR and payroll technology. The acquisition reflects growing healthcare industry interest in using AI to address persistent staffing shortages, reduce expensive external labor and improve workforce retention through more intelligent scheduling.
