Cleveland Clinic is advancing its digital transformation through a comprehensive deployment of Ambience Healthcare's artificial intelligence platform for clinical documentation and coding across its United States ambulatory practices. The implementation, scheduled to begin this month, follows an extensive pilot program that evaluated the technology's effectiveness across more than 80 medical specialties throughout 2024.
The AI-powered system is designed to automatically generate detailed medical notes during patient encounters, which providers then review and approve before integration into the patient's medical record. The platform also creates tailored after-visit summaries for patients, families, and caregivers, enhancing communication and understanding of care plans.
Rohit Chandra, Ph.D., Chief Digital Officer for Cleveland Clinic, emphasized the strategic importance of the implementation: "The promise of AI in healthcare is that it will enable us to care for patients with a higher level of safety and quality, and a better patient and caregiver experience. Our implementation of ambient AI technology delivers on that promise because it helps our providers fully engage with their patients, saves time, and alleviates some of their administrative burden."
The rollout demonstrates Cleveland Clinic's commitment to maintaining transparency and patient autonomy in healthcare delivery. Patients will be informed about the use of AI technology during their visits and will have the option to decline its use. The organization has emphasized that the AI platform will not be involved in medical diagnosis or treatment decisions, with healthcare providers maintaining full responsibility for reviewing and validating all documentation.
The implementation will proceed through a measured, phased approach over several months, allowing for continuous evaluation of the technology's impact on clinical workflows and patient care. This methodical rollout strategy aims to ensure smooth integration while maintaining the highest standards of clinical documentation and patient care.
