Datavant Acquires Ontellus to Transform Healthcare Records Exchange

Datavant, the data collaboration platform trusted for healthcare, has successfully completed its acquisition of Ontellus, a leading provider of health records retrieval and claims intelligence. The acquisition marks a significant expansion for Datavant as it establishes a fourth business vertical dedicated to Legal & Insurance services.

The new division will focus on simplifying the secure, compliant exchange of clinical and billing data between healthcare providers and requesters, including legal and insurance professionals. Vince Cole, former CEO of Ontellus, will lead this new business unit, reporting directly to Kyle Armbrester, Datavant CEO.

"Every hour we can save from the task of exchanging health records is an hour that can be used for patient care," said Kyle Armbrester, Datavant CEO. "By bringing together Datavant and Ontellus, we will transform what has been a largely manual, time consuming process for both making and fulfilling health record requests to a more efficient, digital process that allows providers and requesters to spend more time on higher value activities."

The acquisition aligns with Datavant's core mission of moving health data securely and compliantly from where it resides to where it needs to be, delivered in the right format to authorized users. Ontellus has been pursuing similar objectives through its nationwide platform that provides record requesters with direct access to providers. The company has successfully digitized its records retrieval business, creating efficiencies across the healthcare data exchange ecosystem.

Ontellus's canvassing services add another dimension to Datavant's capabilities. These services deliver detailed claimant treatment timelines that help validate claims or uncover preexisting conditions, enabling insurance customers to reduce unnecessary and costly claims exposure. This functionality complements Datavant's existing infrastructure and extends its reach into new market segments.

"The Ontellus team has built a technology platform and scaled service offerings that are trusted by legal and insurance professionals across the country, and I am confident that through Vince's leadership we will be able to leverage the spectrum of our expertise and capabilities to benefit all of our clients," said Armbrester.

Datavant's current infrastructure enables more than 60 million healthcare records to move between thousands of organizations across the healthcare ecosystem. The company works with over 80,000 hospitals and clinics, 75% of the 100 largest health systems, and more than 300 real-world data partners. This extensive network positions the combined entity to drive meaningful improvements in healthcare data exchange efficiency.

The integration of Ontellus's technology platform and service offerings with Datavant's existing capabilities promises to accelerate the digital transformation of health records exchange, reducing administrative burden and enabling healthcare stakeholders to focus more resources on patient care and strategic initiatives.
