The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized Avulux, an optical filtering lens designed to reduce the impact of light sensitivity in people aged 12 and older with episodic migraine. The lenses are intended to complement existing migraine treatments rather than replace medications or other therapies, providing patients with a non-drug option for managing light-related symptoms during migraine attacks.
Unlike conventional sunglasses, Avulux selectively filters specific wavelengths of light associated with triggering or worsening migraine symptoms, particularly wavelengths in the high-blue and red-amber ranges. At the same time, the lenses allow much of the remaining visible light spectrum to pass through, helping reduce light sensitivity without significantly darkening a person's surroundings. The lenses can be incorporated into regular eyeglasses with or without a vision prescription.
The FDA authorization was supported by a randomized clinical trial involving 78 adults with migraine who used either Avulux or control lenses for four weeks. Participants were instructed to put on the glasses when migraine symptoms began and continue wearing them until the headache resolved. The study did not find a statistically significant difference between the groups on its primary endpoint of pain reduction after two hours or its secondary four-hour endpoint. However, post hoc analyses found improvements in headache pain among participants who began with higher pain scores, while fewer Avulux users reported light sensitivity after two hours.
Additional research presented in 2025 found that the lenses increased the amount of light healthy participants could tolerate before experiencing visual discomfort compared with clear lenses. Together, the findings suggest the technology may be particularly useful for addressing migraine-related photosensitivity, although the primary clinical trial results indicate that evidence for broader pain reduction remains more limited.
Avulux lenses are now available through participating eye care providers. The authorization adds a device-based option to migraine management as companies increasingly explore non-pharmaceutical approaches to reducing symptoms and helping patients manage common migraine triggers.
