GE HealthCare Launches CareIntellect to Predict Hospital Capacity Constraints

GE HealthCare has introduced CareIntellect for Operations, an AI-enabled Software-as-a-Service application designed to help health systems anticipate capacity constraints and manage operational resources. The platform provides forecasts up to 72 hours in advance across unit, department and enterprise levels.

The application analyzes hundreds of patient and operational data points, including bed availability, staffing, patient delays, wait times and ancillary services. It then identifies potential bottlenecks and recommends actions related to discharge, imaging, transfers, capacity and patient throughput.

CareIntellect for Operations incorporates two proprietary GE HealthCare AI models. Its Pressure Forecast model combines historical hospital operations data with real-time information from electronic medical records and resource management systems to anticipate constraints involving census, staffing, emergency department boarding, therapies, procedural recovery and inbound transfers. Its Estimated Day of Discharge model uses longitudinal patient data to predict individual discharge timing, updating estimates hourly as new information becomes available.

The Queen’s Health Systems and Duke Health will serve as the first clinical evaluation sites, providing clinical and operational feedback to inform further development.

“At Queen’s, improving access for the communities we serve is one of our top priorities, and optimizing our operations is critical to helping us achieve that,” said Alex Wroe, Chief Operating Officer at The Queen’s Medical Center. “We’ve seen firsthand how this type of advanced operational software can help us free up more capacity and better use our resources. We look forward to taking this work to the next level, helping us move beyond reacting to capacity challenges and toward proactively ensuring that our beds, teams, and resources are available for the patients who need them most.”

The application builds on GE HealthCare’s hospital operations experience, including its Command Center software, currently used by nearly 500 hospitals and medical facilities globally.

CareIntellect for Operations forms part of the broader CareIntellect family, which uses a common cloud-first infrastructure intended to simplify deployment of additional applications. The solution runs on Amazon Web Services and is available directly from GE HealthCare and through the AWS Marketplace.
