GE HealthCare has received a grant of over $44 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop AI-enabled applications and tools that assist less experienced healthcare professionals in low- and middle-income countries in conducting ultrasound scans for fetal and maternal health and respiratory diseases.
Caption Health, acquired by GE HealthCare earlier this year, specialises in AI-enabled ultrasound guidance software and will lead the development efforts. The funds will be used to create AI-powered ultrasound algorithms that can be deployed on various ultrasound devices and probes, offering clinical decision support to improve the efficiency of obstetric and lung screening scans for pediatric lung health and maternal and fetal care.
This initiative aims to enhance access to higher-quality medical care in underserved regions.
