GE HealthCare announced it will acquire Intelligent Ultrasound Group PLC’s clinical artificial intelligence (AI) software business for approximately $51 million. Intelligent Ultrasound is renowned for its AI-driven image analysis tools that enhance ultrasound efficiency. GE HealthCare aims to integrate these solutions across its ultrasound portfolio, improving workflow and usability for clinicians and patients.
Phil Rackliffe, President and CEO of Ultrasound and Image Guided Therapies at GE HealthCare, expressed enthusiasm for incorporating Intelligent Ultrasound's technology. He highlighted that it would reduce repetitive tasks and simplify exams, enhancing the company's AI-enabled devices and accelerating the development of next-generation AI tools. This acquisition will also bring in Intelligent Ultrasound's research and development team, furthering innovation in AI-enabled image recognition.
Intelligent Ultrasound's ScanNav Assist AI technology, powering SonoLystlive and SonoLyst X/IR on GE HealthCare’s Voluson™ devices, will be fully integrated into GE HealthCare’s systems. This move is expected to streamline workflows, reduce manual processes, and address the shortage of radiology technologists and work-related musculoskeletal disorders among sonographers.
This acquisition, following GE HealthCare's purchase of Caption Health in 2023, strengthens the company's AI-enabled device portfolio, which leads the FDA’s list of AI-enabled device authorizations. The transaction, expected to close in Q4 2024, supports GE HealthCare’s precision care strategy aimed at improving clinical care workflows and patient care quality. Intelligent Ultrasound will continue focusing on its ultrasound simulation technology to enhance ultrasound education.
