Headspace, the digital mental health company, has introduced a new virtual reality app called Headspace XR, leveraging mixed reality and virtual reality to enhance the mind-body connection through movement and breathwork. The app, available on Meta Quest, features mood-boosting games, one-on-one guided meditations, and other techniques, targeting a younger audience, particularly Gen Z.
Headspace plans to conduct a randomised control trial later this year to assess how Headspace XR can aid in social health and connection, exploring the mental health benefits of mindfulness in a virtual environment. The move aligns with research indicating elevated stress and symptoms of depression among Gen Z individuals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Headspace's expansion into virtual reality comes amid efforts to address mental health challenges, especially for younger populations. The company has formed various partnerships to broaden access to its behavioural health offerings, including collaborations with Castell and Virgin Pulse to provide on-demand access to behavioural health services for insurance plan members and employees globally.
Despite experiencing layoffs, with a reduction of 15% of its workforce in July and about 4% in the previous December, Headspace remains committed to innovative approaches, integrating play, meditation, and mindfulness in an immersive virtual experience to support mental well-being.
