Headspace has rolled out major upgrades to Ebb, its empathetic AI companion, introducing a new Voice Mode that lets users speak naturally rather than type when processing emotions. The update also adds Guided Jumpstart Prompts to help users begin difficult conversations and Enhanced Memory that allows Ebb to recall past details, enabling more personalized and continuous emotional support. These features draw on motivational interviewing, an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to encourage reflection and self-understanding.
Voice Mode aims to reduce the friction of typing during moments of stress, making support more intuitive and accessible. Headspace leaders say the goal is to make emotional check-ins feel natural and routine. The enhanced memory system helps Ebb follow up on previous challenges or milestones, while prompts such as “I need a pep talk” or “Help me fall asleep” ease users into conversations when articulating feelings is difficult.
Safety remains central to Ebb’s design. The AI includes topic guardrails, a multi-layered safety system, and real-time crisis escalation pathways. Headspace emphasizes that Ebb is not a replacement for therapy but a complementary resource that directs users to clinically validated content and programs. Since launch, Ebb has processed more than 7 million messages and is increasingly used in corporate wellness programs, now deployed by over 2,000 employers.
The new features are available to Headspace members aged 18+ in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, with plans to expand to more countries and languages in 2026. Headspace also intends to publish research on Ebb’s technical validation, safety, and real-world impact.
