Kakao Healthcare partners with Novo Nordisk for digital diabetes service

Kakao Healthcare, the digital healthcare arm of South Korean internet firm Kakao Corporation, has joined forces with Novo Nordisk to enhance its diabetes management service driven by mobile and AI technologies.

Under a recent memorandum of understanding, the two entities will introduce an intelligent healthcare service to assist diabetes patients. Kakao Healthcare's digital diabetes management service, Project Gamma, will incorporate BIOCORP's Mallya smart sensor, which Novo Nordisk plans to launch in South Korea later this year.

The Mallya smart sensor attaches to insulin pens, automatically recording daily insulin injection data and transmitting it via Bluetooth to the Project Gamma app. Patients can monitor their dosage history in real-time, empowering them to manage their condition independently. Eventually, this data will be integrated with patients' healthcare providers' hospital information systems.

Given the rising diabetes cases, this collaboration holds significant importance. South Korea currently houses about six million adults, with diabetes, and this number is anticipated to increase as the population ages.

Kakao Healthcare has been actively engaged in supporting diabetes patients through digital management initiatives. Its partnership with Novo Nordisk follows a global collaboration with Dexcom to launch a diabetes management service in South Korea. Similarly, Novo Nordisk has collaborated with Health2Sync in Taiwan to sync dose logs from their smart insulin pens with the Health2Sync app and offer patient support programs.

Kakao Healthcare CEO Hwang Hee also said "Through our collaboration with Novo Nordisk, patients with diabetes, whether at home or abroad, will be able to manage their health more easily and conveniently,"
