Eli Lilly has completed its acquisition of AtaiBeckley, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing rapid-acting neuroplastogen therapies for mental health conditions. The acquisition expands Lilly's neuroscience pipeline and strengthens its focus on developing new treatments for patients who do not respond adequately to existing psychiatric medications.
AtaiBeckley's lead investigational therapy, BPL-003, is being developed for treatment-resistant depression, a condition in which patients continue to experience depressive symptoms despite multiple treatment attempts. The company's neuroplastogen approach is designed to promote changes in neural pathways and potentially deliver therapeutic effects more rapidly than conventional antidepressants.
Lilly sees the technology as a potential alternative to treatment models that require continuous or chronic medication. By developing therapies intended to produce rapid and potentially longer-lasting effects, the company hopes to provide additional options for people with difficult-to-treat mental health conditions.
The acquisition was completed following approval from AtaiBeckley shareholders. Lilly will now advance BPL-003 and other neuroplastogen programs as part of its broader neuroscience strategy, with treatment-resistant depression representing a key initial area of focus.
