Medtronic launches MRI Care Pathway system

Medtronic has launched the MRI Care Pathway, a new system that can streamline the process of completing MRI scans for patients with Medtronic MRI compatible cardiac devices. The MRI Care Pathway features a website and tablet-based application to support healthcare providers to reduce scheduling delays during MRI scan workflow. 

Clinicians can use the website to independently verify if a patient’s Medtronic device is MRI compatible. Prior to an appointment the MR technologist can use the app to set the appropriate device parameters for a safe MRI scan. After the scan is complete, the app can be used by technicians to reset the patient's cardiac device to pre-scan settings. 

50-70% of patients with a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) require an MRI during their lifetime. The MRI Care Pathway aims to reduce the workload burden and expense associated with device checks prior to MRI scans. 

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the app and it is commercially available in the U.S. It  is compatible with the Medtronic portfolio of SureScan devices, including pacemakers, cardiac resynchronisation devices, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and insertable cardiac monitor systems.
